Are You Ready for a Bareboat Charter?
A bareboat charter gives you control of the yacht without supplying a professional skipper. That freedom also makes you responsible for the boat, crew, navigation and everyday decisions. Use this guide as an honest readiness check before committing to a charter.
1. Can you safely command the boat?

2. Can you navigate without depending on one screen?
You should be able to interpret charts, depths, hazards, buoyage, headings, position and weather information. Electronic navigation is invaluable, but a competent skipper understands what the display is showing and maintains an alternative when equipment, power or positioning fails.
3. Are your collision-avoidance decisions automatic?

4. Can you anchor for the night?
Read the chart and forecast, select suitable shelter and depth, calculate adequate scope, set the anchor, confirm holding and monitor the boat. You also need a plan if the anchorage becomes unsafe. Start with our anchoring guide.
5. Can you manage the crew and the unexpected?
Skippering is not only boat handling. Consider seasickness, fatigue, injury, frightened crew, changing weather, equipment failure and disagreements. Give clear roles, create conservative plans and make it easy for someone else to call for help.
6. Do you meet the charter company’s requirements?
Ask the charter company exactly which certificates, licences, experience records and radio qualifications it requires for the destination and boat. Requirements differ, and acceptance of a qualification in one location does not guarantee acceptance elsewhere.
