Lights Lesson 2: Sailing Vessels and Small Craft

Rules 25 and 23

Distinguish sailing vessels from power-driven and small-vessel alternatives.

Core lesson

A sailing vessel underway shows sidelights and a sternlight. A vessel under 20 m may combine them in one lantern at or near the masthead. It may additionally show red over green all-round lights, but not with the combined lantern. A sailing vessel also using machinery is power-driven and displays a cone apex down by day.

Scenario: A yacht shows red over green plus separate sidelights and sternlight. What is it?
